Sea Salt, No Iodine Please

pag matataray talaga taste eh ayaw sa iodine. Just like the owner of zubuchon

Sea Salt, No Iodine Please…
by Marketman

For as long as I can remember, I recall my parents saying “you need iodine to avoid goiter…” what the heck is goiter, anyway? According to the Mayo clinic site, goiter is “an enlargement of the thyroid gland.” So in our household, iodized salt was a necessary ingredient (even though I did catch mom using plain sea salt in a lot of our food). Apparently, some natural sea salts can contain trace amounts of iodine, after all it is an abundant chemical in the sea… But for some reason, and there is a lot of history about those reasons on several sites on the net, iodized salt seemed like the best place to sneak that much needed mineral into our daily diets. This is similar to the argument that good potable city water should have flouride to help our teeth/bones, and now that everyone is drinking more bottled water, we all hope to get the flouride from our toothpastes instead…

If you have been reading this blog long enough, you will know I am a bit obsessive/compulsive about my salt. I know the base ingredient/chemical behind all salt is the same, and the taste should be the same too, but I am enamored with different kinds of salt and stock at least a dozen kinds at any one time, probably ridiculous I agree, but this is just one of my quirks. The shape of the crystals, the way it reacts with different ingredients, its various colors from black to grey to pink to white, and its source(s) like high up in the Himalayas, has always intrigued me. So on the drive back from Pagudpud, when we spotted several salt vendors roadside, we HAD to stop to buy some salt. It turns out that the local government mandates the addition of iodine to the locally collected and prepared salt. This sea salt is different from the ones directlly evaporated from salt water. Instead, this salt is cooked and the water steamed off, leaving the salt crystals. The salt is incredibly white and incredibly intense.

But I hate iodine added to my salt. It leaves a chemical flavour and if you use a lot of iodized salt, it really makes a difference to the final dish (try making tapa with iodized vs. not iodized salt to taste the difference). So I avoid iodized salt except in the finest table salts used in a salt shaker, and even then I would use that sparingly, instead putting out salt cellars with “good” non-iodized salt when guests are over for dinner. I wonder why the local government would mandate iodized salt when the province of Ilocos Norte is blessed with so much seafood and seafood is an incredibly good source of natural iodine… At any rate, I whispered conspiratorially with the Manang at the stand and she smiled, nodded, gestured to a young kid, and asked me to wait. Someone went off in a tricycle and a few minutes later I had 10 kilos of FABULOUS unadulterated Ilocos sea salt, without a trace of iodine, straight from the factory and just made that morning. Smell a big bag of iodized salt vs. the plain salt and you will always seek out the plain salt. I felt like I was buying contraband, but at PHP100 for 10 kilos of great looking and tasting salt, this was my buy of the day… P.S. This seems like a wonderful salt for a salt enrusted and baked lapu-lapu, yum!

Mercedes-Benz X-Class production stops in May 2020

It looks like Daimler has had it with the slow-selling Mercedes-Benz X-Class. Back in July 2019, the company was reportedly considering to kill off the Nissan Navara-based pick-up truck due to its poor sales performance.

Now, the company has announced that production of the X-Class will stop in late May of 2020. According to a report by German publication Auto Motor und Sport, Mercedes-Benz has deemed the X-Class as a niche product that is only important in two markets: Australia and South Africa. With the company regularly checking its portfolio in order to see which products should stay or should go, the company has decided to drop the X-Class, despite being only in production for over a little two years.

However, the company did say that sales of the remaining X-Class units will continue, including those that will be built before production stops altogether. Moreover, service, warranty, and after-sales will still be recognized by the dealerships for the X-Class.

Could the X-Class have sold more units if the automaker made it available in the US, as well as in other markets in Asia like the Philippines and Thailand? With a combined sales figure of only 15,300 units sold in 2019 worldwide, the X-Class was not exactly a mass-seller for the company.

Combined with its steep starting price of around $42,800 (about PhP 2.178 million), and competition from other pick-ups like the Volkswagen Amarok and its other twin the Renault Alaskan, the X-Class was faced with a lot of hurdles.

With production set to cease in about 4 months, the Mercedes-Benz X-Class will not be long for this world. All we can say for now is “Auf Wiedersehen X-Class”

Dapat Nissan Terra based na lang yung X class baka bumenta pa

Nissan Terra vs CRV 2.0 gas vs Subaru Forester (2020 variants)

I am currently planning to purchase an SUV/CUV with price range 1.6-1.9M. I previously drove a Montero 2009 which has seen better days. We are a family of 3, and my son is still a toddler. But I will be using the car mostly without any passenger via city driving and once a week highway driving. I am not a car expert and my level of car maintenance expertise is close to nil, so reliability is also an important factor in my decision making. Any input is highly appreciated. Feel free to correct me of any misinformation I may give...aethetics is subjective though. Help me cause wife is getting impatient with my slow decision making...:twak2::lasing: Sorry for the lengthy post.

I prefer the exterior of the Terra among all the three. Ride comfort is great but the CUVs has better ride comfort in my test drive. Ride height is great and the aircon is topnotch, which is great for our tropical climate and the sweaty person in me. When this car came out I really wanted this car solely for looks and the road presence. But the interior is a bit uninspiring for my taste especially the dash board and the gear lever. The 360 camera view is great for the tight spaces as well but among the three this is the most expensive.

I prefer the ride comfort and interior of the CRV. Since I will be driving mostly alone, the good ride comfort is heaven-sent (however the car available for test drive was 2018). The feel of the steering wheel and the over all look of the dash and the smart storage spaces in the cabin is great. I prefer the gas variant eventhough the diesel is the favorite among the consumers. I just prefer the large cabin space of the gas variant and the gear shift lever instead of the buttons. The diesel may have the better fuel consumption, but my wife prefers the quiet engine of the gas as well (maybe she is looking forward to get this from me later on). The gas variant may be the cheapest among the three choices but maybe this can be offset by the gas prices and higher fuel consumption. Among the exterior, this is the one I least preferred, not that it looks bad. Pressing issues I read are the engine mount noise problem. The oil dilution is it a problem for our CRV variants here.

I prefer the safety features of the Subaru Forester and the looks as well. The passive and active features really is appealing especially to us breadwinners. Ride comfort is great but I feel the CRV is a bit better. The exterior exudes a certain vibe that I really like. The interior looks premium but can be intimidating due to the plethora of buttons. Maybe this will pass in time and by studying the manual. Issues I read was the head gasket problem and the issues of recall internationally due to engine failure of the 2.5 liter boxer engine (though what we have is the 2.0 liter here). I am also concerned with maintenance since the service center nearest is around 45mins away. I am also not familiar with the reliability of the boxer engine and cvt engine of Subaru.

So help me. My time is nearly up. Thanks!

And if asking if why Montero is not included among my choices...my wife abhors the new look of the Montero. :nonono::twak2: For me, the rear has improved but I prefer the front of the 2019 model.

Hello Tsikoters, I was wondering if someone has experienced yung tunog na parang tomotope or tunog na parang diesel when driving from a standstill. Lumalabas yung tunog at 1K rpm and below. Pag past 1K rpm na, nawawala na sya. Same thing happens din pag nagdecelerate ka from say 2K rpm, lalabas ulit yung tunog pag hit ng 1K rpm. Wala naman yung sound pag P or N, or pagka naka manual mode. Car is a loaner for my wife sa company nila and has clocked more than 55K kms na.

Kindly shed some light. Thanks sa mga sasagot.

Cheers!

hello.
steering returnability.
okay naman siya pag normal left or right turns.

pero pag full left or full right para mag u-turn, walang bawi/hindi bumabalik, stocked ang steering wheel sa position. so manual ko pang iniikot ang steering wheel.

steps taken,
1. changed power steering fluid.
2. had the front wheels aligned.

2016 Honda City: Buying Oil Filter, need to buy a new washer?

My father bought a 2nd-hand 2016 Honda City and we would be having its change oil so I went to a Honda Showroom. The Officer there sold us an oil filter around 500 pesos. But I was surprised that I need to buy also a washer drain which looks like an O-ring. In the future when I would buy from a neighborhood car accessories store, do I still need to buy that 0-ring washer drain because it seems they are only selling VIC oil filter but it does not have any 0-ring in its package, and I don't want to go to the Casa again because their parts is too expensive...

Any Honda City owners' experiences out there?

Innova G or Rush G ?

Sa mga masters and owners of both Innova G and Rush G, I am planning to replace my 2011 Avanza with a better family car.

I have 3 kids, 7 y/o pa lang eldest so legroom is not an issue sa kanila as well as for me and wife.

1. Usual route is bahay-clinic-bahay ni misis around 1-2 kms
2. Occasionall (every 3 mos) trip to Province (Mt. Banahaw or Pangasinan ) - my current Avanza J can handle the terrain ng bundok Banahaw pero sumabit na rin minsan ilalim and had the power steering tie-rod ba yun replaced. Malalaki kasi bato sa rough road.
3. Usual passengers would be 2 kids daily.
4. When out of town from Banahaw kinakargahan ko ng at least 15pcs na buko and 10pcs niyog plus mga gulay.

Which pickup should I choose this 2020?

Hi Tsikoteers,

I hope you can help me decide. I know this group would be biased towards Hilux but I would still appreciate your honest opinion.

I also know you can't get all favorable features sa isang choice pero I would consider a good compromise.

Eto po yung paggagamitan at considerations ko in purchasing pickup.
  • This will be my daily driver, replacing my current sedan Nissan Sylphy which has 11km/liter consumption on a 15km/h average speed. First time to purchase pickup so I'm interested kung ano yung consumption niya.
  • 80% of the time nasa cemented or paved road ang tatakbuhan but would definitely consider peace of mind na alam ko kakayanin mga akyatan and would stand a rough road.
  • I'm starting out a family (no kids yet) and will be moving out soon once na naturn-over na yung bahay namin. So hauling and cargo is important on the early stages.
  • I would want to keep it for at least 10 years sana so reliability and parts availability is also vital.
  • Medyo mahal yung uutangin so maintenance cost will also be an important consideration.
  • Plus factor pag naka leather seats na siya pero I would consider fabric seats if you can recommend a shop na nag reretrofit ng leather seats.

Although hanep yung manual transmission ng Hilux, ganda ng short throws.

What do you think po mga sir/maam. May 11k, may 70k, may 300k.
